Becoming a ZZP’er (zelfstandige zonder personeel, or sole proprietor) is one of the most popular ways to start a business in the Netherlands. It’s simple, affordable, and accessible — but there are a few key steps to get right from the beginning.

1. Registering with the KvKEvery ZZP must be registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce (Kamer van Koophandel, KvK). This is your official entry into the Dutch business register. The process is straightforward: you make an appointment, bring your ID, and provide details about your business activities. Once registered, you’ll automatically receive a VAT (BTW) number from the Dutch Tax Authority.

2. Choosing Your Business Name and ActivitiesIt might sound obvious, but your business name must be unique and meet certain rules. You’ll also need to clearly define your activities, as this determines how your business is classified for both statistical and tax purposes.

3. Opening a Business Bank AccountWhile not legally required, separating your personal and business finances is strongly recommended. A dedicated business account makes bookkeeping, tax filings, and cash flow management much easier — and looks more professional to clients.

4. Understanding Your Tax ObligationsAs a ZZP, you pay income tax on your profits and charge VAT (BTW) on most of your services. The good news is that the Dutch system offers several deductions and allowances for entrepreneurs, such as the zelfstandigenaftrek and startersaftrek, which can lower your tax burden. Knowing how to make the most of these can save you real money.

5. Setting Up Your AdministrationEven though ZZPs don’t have to file complex annual accounts, you are required to keep accurate records. This includes invoices, receipts, contracts, and bank statements. Good bookkeeping from day one will save you stress later — and ensure you’re ready if the Belastingdienst (Tax Authority) ever asks questions.

Final ThoughtStarting as a ZZP can be quick and relatively simple, but the details — especially around taxes, allowances, and financial planning — depend on your personal situation.
